Health Update: Swine Flu

August 25, 2009
Dear Neumann Student and Parents:

Many of you may be aware of the H1N1 flu virus (swine flu) status from the media. Neumann is committed to providing you with important and up-to-date information as we receive it. Our Health Services staff is tracking the information provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PaDOH).

Public health officials are predicting that the H1N1 flu virus will return in the fall. This virus is highly contagious and is more prevalent in individuals 5 to 25 years of age.

In compliance with the CDC and PaDOH recommendations, Neumann University will mandate any student with a fever and flu-like symptoms to follow the CDC self-isolation guidelines and not attend class or any public gatherings while ill. Any student living in the residence halls with flu-like symptoms must return home to recover. The student cannot return to campus for at least 24 hours after the fever has resolved without the use of Tylenol or Advil.

Health Services will be distributing information about prevention strategies to all students, faculty, and staff, along with updated information from the CDC. Prevention is the key in dealing with H1N1 or the seasonal flu.

Information and updates about H1N1 can be found at:  http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu

Sincerely,

Dennis J. Murphy
